Archive of Indies in Seville
The Archive General of the Indies in Seville (Avenue of the Constitution s/n) will host from September 23 the exhibition "The Adventure of the South Sea” to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the discovery of the
Pacific Ocean by Vasco Nunez de Balboa.
This adventurer from Extremadura was the first European explorer who discovered the Pacific Ocean, and also was the first one to create a city in American lands.
Taking advantage of this event also will be held in the city a first level Americanist Congress, which will be attended of many researchers around the world.
Some of the more than seven thousand American maps and plans that exist in the Archive of the Indies will be used for this exhibition. In fact, this is the section most demanded by researchers.
The Archive of the Indies, beyond its artistic and monumental value, hides some of the most important documents in the history of the discovery of America. For this reason, and in order to preserve the safety of them, the letters of Christopher Columbus or the Treaty of Tordesillas will not leave Seville anymore.
