Sevilla aims to increase the list of monuments listed as World Heritage existing city. For this, the Seville City Council wants to nominate the Plaza of Spain and the Torre del Oro to Unesco, taking the celebration of the "International Conference on Contemporary Architecture in Historic Cities".
Plaza de Espña was built by Anibal Gonzalez for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929, on land donated by the Duchess of Montpensier. Its semicircular shape symbolizing the embrace of Spain to its former American colonies, and is oriented towards the river as a way of connecting with America.
The Torre del Oro was built in 1220 and 1221 was part of a fortified enclosure surrounding the city. It joined the Torre de la Plata through a wall, so basically exerted a defensive work. Today it houses the Naval Museum.
The Andalusian capital already has three monuments declared World Heritage Site since 1987, such as the Cathedral, the Archive of the Indies and the Royal Palace, with the construction of the Torre Pelli had the risk of being delisted by Unesco . With the possible inclusion of the Plaza de España and the Torre del Oro, not only is away this idea, but also reinforces the image of Seville as a World Heritage Site.
